Police Arrest 36 Suspects Over Lynching of Officer at Gindabour

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects in connection with the death of a police officer who was allegedly attacked and lynched by a mob at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.

According to a press release issued by the Savannah Regional Police Command on Thursday, September 17, preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred on Wednesday, September 16, when the deceased officer and his colleagues were conducting highway patrol duties along the Gindabour–Kenken community road.

The Police said a motorbike rider approaching the patrol team suddenly diverted into the bush after seeing the police vehicle. The officers reportedly became suspicious and followed up from another direction, where they found the rider unconscious on a bush road.

The officers picked up the man and were transporting him to a hospital when he reportedly died on the way.

The Police said following news of the rider's death, a mob from the community attacked the officers, resulting in the death of General Constable Redeemer Owusu.

Other officers sustained varying degrees of injuries, while the police vehicle was also damaged during the attack.

The bodies of both the deceased police officer and the motorbike rider have since been conveyed to the Damongo Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Security beefed up

The Police Command said the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed investigators and intelligence officers to assist with the ongoing investigations and identify those responsible for the attack.

Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna, and Kalba, together with the Regional Intelligence Team, have also been deployed to the area to strengthen security and maintain law and order.

The 36 suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be put before court.

The Savannah Regional Police Command has condemned the attack on its officers and says it will ensure that persons found culpable face the full rigours of the law.

The Police emphasised that the account remains subject to ongoing investigations, with autopsies and further inquiries expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
