Students Should Repeat JHS If They Fail Maths or English—Daniel Fenyi
GES PRO says students who fail to meet the required standard should remain at the basic level and retake the examination.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Daniel Fenyi, has called for students who obtain Grade 9 in Mathematics, English Language, or both at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to remain at the basic level and retake the examination the following year.
According to Mr Fenyi, students who fail to meet the required academic standard for Senior High School (SHS) placement should not be promoted to the next level without first strengthening their foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr on Starr FM, the GES PRO explained that such students should be supported academically and given another opportunity to improve their performance.
“Students who fail to meet the required standard should be allowed to continue schooling at the basic level rather than progress to the next stage without the necessary foundational skills,” he said.
Mr. Fenyi noted that promoting students who lack the expected basic skills to SHS could expose them to significant academic challenges, making it difficult for them to cope with the demands of secondary education.
He compared the situation to a student who repeats a lower class to strengthen their understanding before moving forward, arguing that students who obtain Grade 9 should similarly be given time to improve their academic foundation.
“The message is that you repeat the class, you repeat the JHS. You will learn, we will strategize, we will advise you, and then we take the exams next year,” Mr. Fenyi stated.
He, however, stressed that students who are required to repeat JHS would not be abandoned. Instead, they would receive the necessary academic support and guidance to help them improve before sitting the examination again.
Mr. Fenyi further cautioned that placing students who have not attained the required foundational skills in SHS could result in greater academic difficulties.
“If we push you to senior high school, you are simply going to struggle a lot at senior high school,” he said.
