Juliette Awata, a Kenyan woman who recently went viral after accusing a man of abandoning her with a hotel bill worth nearly KSh 10,000 following a date, has opened up about the emotional distress she is experiencing due to the social media backlash.
Awata, who initially shared her experience to expose what she described as an embarrassing incident, says the criticism and trolling from social media users have taken a toll on her emotional well-being.
In a fresh update shared on Facebook, she admitted that the negative comments have left her overwhelmed and affected her confidence. She also disclosed that the situation has become so uncomfortable that she now avoids going out.
“Social media is so toxic, daaamn. I am not okay. Mnataka kunipea ulcers na heart pressures,” she wrote, adding laughing emojis to her post.
The incident reportedly began when a man invited Awata for drinks at a rooftop restaurant in Nairobi. According to her account, the man excused himself several times during their meeting before allegedly disappearing without settling the bill.
Awata claimed that the outstanding bill was approximately KSh 10,000, leaving her with no option but to pay before leaving the establishment.
However, she maintained that her personal consumption amounted to only about KSh 1,550, suggesting that she was forced to cover expenses she had not incurred.
Although she initially shared the incident to speak out about her experience, the attention it generated has reportedly brought her more emotional stress than she anticipated.
The incident has since sparked conversations on social media about dating experiences, financial responsibility and the importance of treating others with respect.
