GES Announces New Academic Calendar for 2026/2027 Academic Year
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a new academic calendar for the 2026/2027 academic year, outlining reopening dates, vacation periods and closing dates for public basic and senior high schools across the country.
The new calendar, released on October 31, 2026, is expected to guide academic activities throughout the school year and ensure effective teaching and learning in schools.
According to the calendar, basic schools will begin the first term on January 13, 2027, and end on April 17, 2027.
The second term is scheduled to run from May 5 to August 1, 2027, while the third term will commence on September 2 and end on December 5, 2027.
For Senior High Schools (SHSs), the first semester is expected to begin on January 20, 2027, with the second semester scheduled to end in early December.
The GES explained that the calendar takes into account public holidays, national events and the need to provide adequate instructional hours for students to complete their respective syllabi. It also makes provision for vacation periods to allow students and teachers to rest and prepare for subsequent academic activities.
The Service further indicated that consultations were held with key stakeholders, including teacher unions, parents, and school heads, before the calendar was finalised.
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has welcomed the early release of the academic calendar, describing it as an important step towards helping teachers plan their lessons and prepare teaching materials ahead of reopening.
Parents have also expressed optimism about the announcement, saying it will enable them to make adequate financial preparations for their children's educational needs, including uniforms, textbooks and other school supplies.
Some students have equally welcomed the calendar, indicating that it provides an opportunity to plan their academic activities and prepare adequately for examinations.
The GES has directed all regional and district directors of education to ensure strict compliance with the approved calendar. It has also cautioned school authorities against making unauthorised changes to the scheduled academic dates without approval from its headquarters.
The Service has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the quality of education in Ghana and creating a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.
Parents and guardians have also been encouraged to support their children's education by providing the necessary learning materials and motivating them to take their studies seriously.
