Haruna Iddrisu visits Accra Newtown school collapse site as rescue operations continue

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has visited the scene of the building collapse at Accra Experimental Basic School, where emergency teams are working tirelessly to rescue individuals trapped beneath the debris.

The uncompleted school structure—reportedly used for Christian worship on Sundays—collapsed earlier in the day, triggering a swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and the Ghana Police Service.

As of the Minister’s arrival, approximately eight people had been rescued. However, authorities are yet to confirm the total number of victims or the extent of injuries.

During his visit, the Minister engaged with emergency personnel and monitored the ongoing rescue operation to ensure efforts are well-coordinated and effective.

Residents and bystanders have gathered at the scene, offering support where possible, while rescue teams proceed cautiously to avoid further incidents. The area has since been cordoned off to provide a safe working environment for responders.

Officials are urging the public to remain calm as operations continue, assuring that updates will be provided on both the condition of those affected and the progress of the rescue mission.
