Teacher recruitment to be decentralized – Mahama declared

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to decentralise the recruitment and posting of teachers in a bid to tackle the uneven distribution of educators across the country.

Speaking during an engagement with Civil Society Organisations on Monday, March 30, he noted that the current centralised system has led to a concentration of teachers in urban centres, leaving many rural communities understaffed.

Under the proposed reforms, teacher recruitment and vacancy announcements will be handled at the district level to promote a more balanced nationwide deployment. Districts will be responsible for advertising their own vacancies, while recruitment into some urban areas will be limited due to oversubscription.

Mahama emphasised that unless deliberate steps are taken to redistribute teachers, rural schools will continue to face shortages. As part of the new directive, major cities such as Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi will no longer be open for postings unless vacancies exist, compelling prospective teachers to consider underserved districts.

He also acknowledged the backlog of trained teachers and nurses awaiting employment, assuring that government will sustain recruitment efforts to gradually absorb them into the public sector.
