President John Dramani Mahama has ordered a major expansion in recruitment across Ghana’s security services, increasing the target from 20,000 to 40,000 personnel over the next four years.
The directive followed a high-level meeting between the President and heads of the country’s security agencies, alongside the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, and the Acting Minister for Defence, Cassiel Ato Forson. The meeting reviewed the ongoing recruitment exercise and assessed progress made so far.
In a statement issued on Monday, March 16, the President was briefed on developments in the process before instructing that the intake of men and women into the various security institutions be significantly increased to strengthen Ghana’s security architecture.
President Mahama also stressed the importance of transparency and fairness throughout the recruitment process, urging security agency leaders to ensure that all qualified applicants are given equal opportunities.
The meeting was attended by key figures within the national security structure, including the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, the Secretary to the President, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs, and the National Security Coordinator.
Also present were heads of the various security institutions, including the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohunu of the Ghana Police Service; Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service; the Director-General of the Ghana National Fire Service; the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Samuel Amadu; and the Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission.
The expanded recruitment initiative is expected to strengthen personnel capacity across the security services while also creating more employment opportunities for young people seeking careers in the sector.
