7,000 Slots Not Enough — Teacher Trainees Fight Back Against Teacher Recruitment

The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) has raised serious concerns over the government’s planned teacher recruitment, cautioning that the approach could weaken the country’s long-established posting system.

In a statement issued on April 12, 2026, the association acknowledged reports that the Ministry of Education intends to recruit about 7,000 trained teachers from recent cohorts. While recognizing the prevailing economic constraints, TTAG argued that the proposed number is insufficient and could worsen unemployment among qualified teachers.

According to the association, unresolved recruitment challenges affecting trained teachers from 2022, coupled with the growing numbers from the 2023 and 2024 batches, make the limited intake inadequate. TTAG warned that this could significantly delay employment opportunities for many graduates.

The group strongly opposed what it described as a selective recruitment approach that leaves the majority of trained teachers without jobs while only a small fraction is employed. It also raised concerns about a potential departure from the automatic posting policy, emphasizing that any such shift must be clearly communicated and broadly discussed with stakeholders.

Furthermore, TTAG criticized what it called an uncertain and unstructured recruitment process, stressing the need for a transparent, predictable, and consistent annual system for teacher employment. The association is therefore calling for the immediate release of a comprehensive national roadmap to clear the backlog of unemployed teachers and ensure a more organized recruitment framework going forward.

TTAG also appealed to the Ministry of Finance and the President to reconsider the recruitment figures and increase the intake, demonstrating a stronger commitment to addressing the growing unemployment situation among trained teachers.

The association concluded by stressing that it will not remain silent as uncertainty, delays, and selective recruitment practices threaten the future of trained teachers in Ghana. It emphasized that the issue extends beyond numbers, touching on fairness, trust, and the integrity of the country’s teacher education system.
