No Student Should Be Turned Away Over Trunks or Chop Boxes – GES Directs
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed all Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) to ensure that duly admitted first-year students are not denied accommodation because of the type of storage container they bring to school.
What Prompted the Directive?
The directive follows reports that some schools have allegedly been turning away newly admitted students or refusing to accommodate them because they reported to school with metal trunks, wooden chop boxes, or other personal storage containers.
According to GES, such practices can place an unnecessary financial burden on parents and guardians, particularly when families are required to purchase specific types or brands of trunks and chop boxes.
What GES Is Directing Schools to Do
GES has outlined the following directives:
1. Fair Treatment for All Students
All students admitted into boarding houses must be treated fairly and accommodated without discrimination.
2. No Denial of Accommodation
No duly admitted student should be denied accommodation solely because of the type of trunk or chop box they bring, provided the item is reasonably sized, safe, and does not pose a health or safety risk.
3. Regional Directors to Ensure Compliance
Regional Directors have been directed to inform Heads of Schools to desist from the practice immediately.
Warning to School Heads
GES has warned that any reported case will be investigated and submitted to Management for appropriate action.
Heads of SHS/SHTS who fail to comply with the directive may face action in accordance with the applicable standards, regulations and laws of the Ghana Education Service.
Official Statement
The directive was signed and released on September 18, 2026, by Prof. Smile Dzisi (Mrs.), Deputy Director-General (Management Services), for the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.
KEY MESSAGE TO PARENTS & STUDENTS
A duly admitted boarding student should not be denied accommodation simply because of the type of trunk or chop box brought to school, provided it is reasonably sized, safe, and does not create a health or safety risk.
