Police Retrieve Weapons in Follow-Up Operation; Three Suspects Dead After Gunfire Exchange

The Upper East Regional Police Command has retrieved several weapons and motorbikes following a follow-up operation targeting a suspected robbery gang linked to a series of attacks on motorbike riders and mobile money vendors across parts of the region.

The gang is reportedly connected to robbery incidents in Bawku, Binduri, Pusiga, Garu, Zebilla and surrounding communities.

According to the Police, the operation took place at a location in the Tilly Forest, where some of the suspects had indicated that their firearms were concealed.

During the operation, the Police team came under gunfire, resulting in injuries to three suspects identified as Amadu Apiiga, 33; Philip Vokbilla; and Bilal Adabode, alias Sulley, who had led the Police to the location.

The three suspects were subsequently conveyed to the hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival. Other individuals believed to have sustained gunshot wounds reportedly fled the scene.

Two Police officers also sustained injuries during the operation and are currently receiving medical attention.

The Police said the suspects have also been linked to the murder of a Police officer during a robbery incident at Zebilla on February 8, 2026.

Two locally manufactured single-barrel guns

Two pistols, including a BRUNI 92 pistol

Eleven rounds of 9mm ammunition

Eighteen BB live cartridges

Three sharp cutlasses

Four unregistered Yamaha Aerox scooters

A pair of black boots

One motorbike number plate

Two mobile phones

The Police are urging members of the public to report anyone found with suspected gunshot wounds to the nearest Police station or other appropriate authorities.

Meanwhile, the six other members of the gang who were earlier arrested remain in custody and are assisting with investigations.

The Police say efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest the remaining members of the gang, as well as trace the source of the weapons recovered.
