Burkina Faso Lifts Ban on Tomato Exports

Ghana has welcomed Burkina Faso’s decision to lift its suspension on fresh tomato exports, a move expected to ease supply constraints and help stabilise prices on the local market.

The export ban, announced by Burkinabé authorities on March 19, had worsened supply challenges in Ghana, where demand for tomatoes remains consistently high.

In a statement issued on April 2, 2026, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry described the development as a positive outcome of ongoing bilateral engagements between the two countries.

According to the Ministry, one of five key meetings held between Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare and her Burkinabé counterparts on the sidelines of the WTO MC14 in Yaoundé, Cameroon, played a crucial role in securing the removal of the trade restriction.

The Ministry assured the public of its continued collaboration with Burkinabé authorities and local stakeholders to sustain a smooth and mutually beneficial trading environment.

Meanwhile, efforts to strengthen Ghana’s domestic tomato value chain are being intensified. Government initiatives such as “Feed the Industry” and “Feed Ghana” are aimed at boosting local production, improving yields, and ensuring a more reliable supply of tomatoes.

Targeted interventions—including irrigation projects and the allocation of suitable land for large-scale cultivation—are also underway to support year-round production and promote stronger linkages between farmers and processors.

The Ministry further urged tomato traders and industry players to cooperate with government measures designed to protect both consumers and local processors.

Government emphasised that these efforts form part of a broader strategy to safeguard local industries while promoting sustainable agricultural development.
